Vitamin and Its Function

As Nobel Prize winner Albert Szent-Györgyi pointed out, “A vitamin is a substance that makes you ill if you don’t eat it.” Vitamins are organic molecule that needed by body in a small amounts. There are 13 vitamin that have been known for human health. Vitamin can be divided into water soluble vitamin and fat soluble vitamin. Vitamin B and C are water soluble vitamins, whereas vitamin A, D, E, and K are fat soluble vitamins.

Vitamin B1 (thiamine)
It has functions in metabolism process, deficiency this vitamins will make beriberi (tingling, poor coordination, and reduced heart function). The source of B1 are whole grains, peanuts, and legumes.

Vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
Major functions in the body is in metabolism process, if deficiency will maka skin lesions, such as cracks at corners of the mouth. The source of B2 are meats, dairy products, enriched grains, and vegetables.

Vitamin B3 (niacin)
It has functions in energy yielding, deficiency will shown skin and gastrointestinal lesions, and confusion. Can be obtained from meats, nuts, and grains.

Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid)
The functions of B5 is a component to produce energy, deficiency will shown Fatigue, numbness, tingling of hands and feet. Meats, whole grains, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables are source of this vitamin.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)
Major functions is in metabolism process, deficiency this vitamin will make Irritability, convulsions, muscular twitching, and anemia. Whole grains, vegetables, and meats are source of this vitamin.

Vitamin B7 (biotin)
The functions of biotin is for process of synthesis fat, glikogen, and amino acid. The symthoms of deficiency are Scaly skin inflammation and neuromuscular disorders. The source of biotin are meats, vegetables, and legumes.

Vitamin B9 (folic acid)
It has functions in metabolism, deficiency biotin will shown anemia and birth defects. The source of folic acid are nuts, legumes, whole grains, vegetables, and oranges.

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin)
The functions of cobalamin are for productions of nucleid acids and and red blood cells. The symthoms of deficiency are Anemia, numbness, and loss of balance. Meats, eggs, dairy products are the source of this vitamin.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
Major functions of vitamin C is as antioxidant and synthesis collagen. The symthoms of deficiency are Scurvy (degeneration of skin and teeth), and delayed wound healing. The source of this vitamin are citrus fruits, tomatoes, and broccoli.

Vitamin A (retinol)
It has functions as component of visual pigments and maintenance of epithelial tissues.The consequence of deficiency are Blindness, skin disorders, and impaired immunity. Retinol can be obtained from dark green and orange vegetables, orange fruits, and dairy products.

Vitamin D
The functions of vitamin B is to help absorbtion of calcium and phosphorus, deficiency this vitamin will shown Rickets (bone deformities) in children, and bone softening in adults. Egg yolk and daiy products are source of vitamin D.

Vitamin E (tocopherol)
The functions of tocopherol are as antioxidant and helps prevent damage to cell membrane. Deficiency tocopherol may lead nervous system degeneration. It can be obtained from Seeds, nuts, and vegetables oils.

Vitamin K (phylloquinone)
It has functions in blood clotting process, deficiency this vitamin will make defective blood clotting. The source of this vitamin are green vegetables, tea, also made by colon bacteria.
